As this book came to a close, I found myself growing more and more restless to discover the outcome of this tangled mess of good intentions, bad decisions, and dumb luck. Richard Price brought this book to such a fever pitch it was almost unbearable.
To clarify, this was the most pleasant form of intense anticipation mixed with dread- to see how it would all end- to feel the emotions of all the players. It was thoroughly entertaining, well-written, pure enjoyment from start to finish. Highly recommend.

Super entertaining book. Richard Price is an absolute master of dialogue - the characters' voices jump off the page. The novel is somewhat lengthy, and I think a number of things can be cut, but none of it is boring, long-winded, or uninteresting. He splits the novel into two points of view: Strike's and Rocco's. Neither are in first person, but they are very close third person. You anticipate the two's meeting from the very beginning, and are not let down. Wonderful book.

Vivid writing, realistic characters, great situations and stunning dialogue all set in gritty, modern day US big cities. If you are a fan of the phenomenally successful series "The Wire", you will recognize the writing immediately. Easy book to recommends

I'm not sure if it's good literature, but Richard Price writes a hell of a book.

I enjoyed reading it. The characters were believable and engaging - even the "bad guys."

This is one of the best-written, most human books I have ever read. As years go by, my opinion of it only increases. Don't let the sound of homicide police and crack-dealers turn you away. A true masterpiece.

Fans of The Wire, pick this up! Some scenes from The Wire came directly from this book. Prince is a master at creating authentic dialog and intense character driven stories.

This is a great novel. Not just a great crime novel, but a great novel in any genre. Price is a fantastic writer.

A bit overly wordy, but a gritty depiction of a place and life that I can't imagine.
