Corelli's Mandolin: A Novel (Vintage International)

by Louis de Bernieres

Extravagant, inventive, emotionally sweeping, Corelli's Mandolin is the story of a timeless place that one day wakes up to find itself in the jaws of history.  The place is the Greek island of Cephallonia, where gods once dabbled in the affairs of men and the local saint periodically rises from his sarcophagus to cure the mad.  Then the tide of World War II rolls onto the island's shores in the... The love story between Captain Corelli and Pelagia, during WWII was poignant and heartbreaking. The captain is a member of the Italian Army who is being billeted with a family on the Island of Cephallonia, during the occupation. I loved the characters, the setting, and the romance. I did not like the protracted chapters about the history of the island of Cephallonia, or the involved stories of Il Duce. Overall those were minor complaints. OK... and did I mention I'm well over a hundred pages into the thing and still no sign of the main character? This is becoming a will of force to get to the "good part" that everyone keeps saying is there...

Am finding my second attempt to read this only slightly more successful, that is to say, I've forced myself to keep reading. As far as I know it was originally written in English, but it feels to me as though it's a poor translation from another language - clunky, every other word is pulled straight out of the Obscure Words dictionary... not to mention the constant jumping in and out of French, Italian, Greek... most of which I can decipher by context, but b/c there are so many other words I don't recognize, I can hardly tell what's supposed to be English and what isn't. And I'm a fairly well-educated adult with two degree on my way to a 3rd qualification. So why does this book make me feel think? Annoying.

One of my favorite reads. Beautifully written. Wonderful Greek history. Looking for other books by this author. Has anyone read "Birds Without Wings"?
