I actually read this in the original Spanish...El Amor en los Tiempos de Colera. I plan to read it in English next; I'm sure it will move me even further. The idea, that this couple is kept apart but destined to be together, the unconquerability of their mutual fate, it what makes this such a compelling read. Garcia Marquez is an incredible author; I've loved everything he's written that I've read.

I could not get into this book, very confusing in the beginning, too much work to keep trying to keep it all straight.

While delivering a message to her father, Florentino Ariza spots the barely pubescent Fermina Daza and immediately falls in love. What follows is the story of a passion that extends over 50 years, as Fermina is courted solely by letter, decisively rejects her suitor when he first speaks, and then joins the urbane Dr. Juvenal Urbino, much above her station, in a marriage initially loveless but ultimately remarkable in its strength. Florentino remains faithful in his fashion; paralleling the tale of the marriage is that of his numerous liaisons, all ultimately without the depth of love he again declares at Urbino's death. In substance and style not as fantastical, as mythologizing, as the previous works, this is a compelling exploration of the myths we make of love. Highly recommended. The story kept me busy for one week to enjoy the true love of a man towards a girl from age of 16 to 75 years old waiting for her all these years just to show her his love and passion. Still I wonder can really such a love be true or it was just a fiction or legend!!!!!! What ever it was I really enjoyed.

I hated this book. I couldn't even finish reading it. I thought the plot was very compelling but I couldn't stand the minute details the author dwelled upon.

    One of Garciá Márquez's best. A must-read.

A pain to read, just like other romance books. The storyline was too slow for my liking, and I just can't feel the love despite it being a romance book. I'm sorry to say, but I'm giving it two stars just for the effort.

Love, love, love. At first, it was a little difficult to get through, but once I did, am I glad! This is a strong, visual, and beautifully written story. A year ago, I attended a book club meeting with others who didn't feel as passionate about it as I, but then I realized, why, of course they don't! If you look at love through rose colored glasses and enjoy the view, if you believe true love is attainable, no matter the years, you should pick up a copy today.
Again, be patient and wait for the breakthrough!
