“It is useless if you do not read the book, this is just another gadget.I will sign out.”
“I just finished this book and although I struggled through it at the beginning I found that on the whole the book was very good. The writing style reminded me of a somewhat Victorian style. I will be reading more from Marquez for sure.”
“But hey, what is that thing with kissing in left cheek or right. Whats the difference ?”
“Have you been bombarded by complete strangers who wanted to know, after you have written a review, and/or made comments expressing your opinion of a book, whether they should read this book? And it isn't that they took the time to see who you are, then ask in a note, no, they just spammed you and everyone else on Shelfari who has said book on shelf. Does this irriate you? If so, you can do something about it: you can contact either of the two Shelfari reps below, or better yet, you can contact both of them and ask them to please remove the new and annoying feature that allows this spamming!http://www.shelfari.com/amandahttp://www.shelfari.com/timothygray”
“This book is amazing in a number of ways. First, the book hsd rich and interesting characters. The hot humid setting is also perfect for the obsessive and sensual themes of the book. The repressed love affair between Florentino and Fermina echoes the grand unrequited passions of the days of chivalry and I thought Fermina's sudden rejection of him was quite reasonable: who hasn't come to their senses after an infatuation and realized the object of their desires was quite unsuitable? Florentino was not meant to be a romantic hero beyond his persistent desire to have Fermina..he is physically unattractive, illegitimate, and a predator (his treatment of America is indefensible). So this is not a great love story, it is more of a story of the ways we love...unwisely, carelessly, obsessively, hopefully, secretly, profanely, and (this is the best love in the book) - we love when others tell us we are too old or too disabled to love - and we should not be afraid to love with our physical being even when life and old age ravishes us.”
“This book is hard to read. It is at times over descriptive and rich in detail. But the core of the book to me was beautiful. I did not see Florentino Ariza as a stalker but as a simple man who was true to his heart. I found his way of loving typical of latin culture. He did not stop living his life, he just kept his true love alive in his heart. It was a true love story, novella style! ”
“I read the book, then I returned to the first page. Only then did I understood the clues given there for the story which starts to weave. the death of a man and his dog, the bitter smell in the air, the suffocating weather sends the reader to the main lines of the book: life and death and different forms and manifestations of love and passion through the novel”
“I thought it was just me! I am struggling through it. I read Gabriel Garcia Marquez' other book -- 100 Years of Solitude and thought it was pretty good (except the repeat of character names were confusing). This one is such a slow read. I've had to start over from the beginning twice! Maybe I'll just give up on it.”
