“I also really enjoyed this book, but agree with "Solitary" and was completely disgusted by his sexual relationship with the young girl, America (a cousin, or some sort of blood relative no less!). It was very perverted! I thought maybe at the end there would be a twist in which America would end up on the river boat with them at the end and kill either one or both of them...but instead she killed herself--it was a really disturbing and distracting episode in the book. However, I really enjoyed this book because of Marquez's storytelling and his incredible use of language, and his handling of the theme of love. His final message seems to be that love is real, true love endures everything, and we can never stop loving, no matter how old we are.”
“Oh but I like the style of Marquez. It's true he is such a good story teller. His style is truly fantastic. Great style and the way he switched from one memory to another. Realistic...But i still hate the characters...”
“A great read, a new favourite from a true storyteller.”
“incredible book! The language is as sensual as the novel's setting. Unrequitted love, can love last a lifetime? a true old fashioned romance. Read the book before seeing the movie. My book club's favorite book for the year!”
“Uff! Love in the Time of Cholera is the #1 in my waiting list!!! As soon as I finished 100 years of solitude I will read this book! A friend highly recommended it to me! SOOOOO! And 'cause I'm in a romantic phase, even through I'm not in love or anything! hehe... Hope I enjoy both (I've just started 100 years) or at least "like" them!”
“Should be renamed 'Sex in the time of Cholera'???I saw the movie last night and now I remembered I had read this book before! The movie was entertaining. (They didn't quite handle the passage of time so well..although the make-up people did try) . Florentino is a lovesick fool and the way he turns into a sexaholic stalker in the movie is highly amusing. Morality? what morality? I felt sorry for Fermiana, putting up with Florentino earnest pleadings, in the end, it seems she just gives in to sleep with the guy because she can't say no.It's a romantic piece of fluff, an improbable fantasy which, like most fantasies, are enjoyable at the time, leave no lasting impression and are forgotten the next day.”
“I finished reading this book few days ago .. and I can tell that Marquez is a master story teller , no doubt . He can easily run between the events and shift from one seen to other and one time to other very smoothly that you keep on running with him in his world . As for the story itself I think it started so nicely as an oriental-type of forbiddened love . Something more like a teenagers love in closed conservative countries . That was intresting a new . But as you go on in the story you can see that Florentino has grown more into an uncontrolable animal . And the auther is trying to find an excuse for his misbehaving ! I really was irritated by the story of seduction for the inoccent child America , and her horrible death at the end of the story . THis is so " unethical "and discusting .was it love after all to Fermania ?? I think if from the begining of the the story Florentino was able to spend some time with Ferminia he would forget all about her later and spare us much of the headache . It was a great story after all .. Facinating and charming ..”
“I read this book more than ten years ago. It has won my heart and made me realize for the first time love could be that beautiful”
“I just started to read this book, and it seems really slow...does it pick up?”
“I know. I was expecting something very different. It was an ok read, but I don't understand what the excitment was all about.”
