Very disturbing. Not sure what inspired Joyce to become the inside voice of a molester. Whatever she did, it worked.

I don't know how to rate this book, because it's SO disturbing. Oates writes in a unique first person narrative using punctuation and (&) signs all throughout her novel. I'm not sure that I like this style. Her characters are really one dimensional because they never get an actual voice. Everything is heard and processed through the mind of Q___P___ as he calls himself. After I realized what Quentin, the main character means by Zombie, I was shocked. I would never have guessed why the book was titled Zombie, because it has nothing to do with the undead. My only fear is that Zombie will give real-life psychopaths ideas, but then again, this book has been out for over a decade. This book is not for most people. Spoiler alert: it's written from the perspective of a murderous, sex-obsessed psychopath, and it puts him as the protagonist.

The title really adds a lot to the story. I found that I was not emotional about the victims in the story, and I guess that lends itself to Quentin's own lack of feeling. The kills are written so matter-of-factly that you never get to care about them, with the exception of SQUIRREL. I highly recommend this book to parents. Read it so you know what kind of crazy people are out there, and then protect your children at all costs, even when your kids are teens and look tough enough to fend for themselves!

I gave this two stars because the writing was well done and the ability of Oates to get into the mind of a psychopath was fascinating. It it had not been Oates, I'm not sure I would have been as generous. The story content was unoriginal - it read as if it was ripped from the headlines with a heavy Dahmer-esque vibe to it. The content had a strong shock factor and very little haunting depth that Oates is known for.

Let me be clear that I am NOT giving this book a low rating because of the writing. JCO really is the master of psychological drama--she gets in her characters' minds like no other writer I know. However, this book is so incredibly horrifying that I could not possibly imagine recommending this book to anyone else. Not sure why I expected anything else from a book about Jeffrey Dahmer, but Oates is definitely not to blame for my weak stomach.
