I suggest Anthem as a starter to Ayn Rand's books. If you like it, move on to Atlas Shrugged and if you can stomach that, then Fountainhead is a bit different, but has some though-provoking ideas in it as well.

My personal favorite: Critic tells playwright that his play is going to be a huge hit and he is going to make it a huge hit for him. The playwright is flattered and tells the critic that he is thrilled that the critic likes the play. The critic tells the playwright that...

Didn’t Like It

My favorite critic said this is so bad that milk will come out of your nose before u finish it, i agree wholeheartedly.
the funny thing is that this hilariously melodramatic uber-man fantasy remained for years the staple for what individualistic behavior should be, with tragic results.
oh, there's a sort of "philosophical" discussion near the end that seems to be aiming for some sort of "grand inquisitor" grandeur, i've read star wars "novels" that were better than this.
