"As a boy, I never knew where my mother was from -- where she was born, who her parents were. When I asked she'd say, "God made me," When I asked if she was white, she'd say "I'm light skinned," and change the subject.

I've read The Color of Water twice, once in 1996 when it was first...

When this was released in installments years ago in the New York Times - I read it voraciously. Thought it was amazing - the story of an African American boy discovering that his mother was white and of Orthodox Jewish descent. Since meeting both the the author and his mother - I am still in love with this book. Great read.

A tender tribute to a man's mom and a simultaneous critique of what it means to be a black man in the US-America--as well as our narrow definitions of race.

I read this for a high school English course...reluctantly. It was alright, I suppose, but I wouldn't have chosen it.

In the course of her lifetime, a Jewish woman whose father was an Orthodox rabbi, moves to New York, marries two black men, and bears 12 children, all of whom go on to complete college and in several cases, get advanced degrees. An amazing story of Ruth’s life with an abusive father; a meek, disabled mother, and the prejudice she endured from both blacks and whites, and how she embraced the African-American culture.
