The Joke (Definitive Version)

The JOKE (Definitive Version)

by Milan Kundera

All too often, this brilliant novel of thwarted love and revenge miscarried has been read for its political implications. Now, a quarter century after The Joke was first published and several years after the collapse of the Soviet-imposed Czechoslovak regime, it becomes easier to put such implications into perspective in favor of valuing the book (and all Kundera 's work) as what it truly is:... This is the first Kundera work I've ever read but I am in awe at how fluidly & accurately he can put into words basic human thoughts & emotions. Here, he drives home the point that things may turn out differently that what you hope or expect, that revenge may not necessarily be sweet, rather it may even dig you a hole deeper than what was already started.

    Great quote:
"Life is beautiful, we can never celebrate it enough."

I was fairly disappointed with THE JOKE, Milan Kundera's first novel. The first half was well written and icluded some great philosophical quotes. The problem came with the finally third which jumped nonsensically from narrator to narrator. I was confused, but was too bored to backtrack and see what's going on. In summary: First half good 4 stars, last half bad 2 stars. 3 stars over all.

I've been having trouble reading novels lately because I just haven't been able to get into the plots. But this one has grabbed me from the first page.

this is some seriously good reading. the absurdity of the era is in every chapter, characters are like real, the storyline is perfect. for me it's one of the best Kundera's works, although I would actually reread most of them over and over again

couldn't finish it because the dog chewed the last 50 or so pages. a very good read otherwise.

Kundera probes love, life, and relationships in a way that constantly leaves me awestruck. He explores the way sex can mean vastly different things to the participants as well as probing the challenges of leading a life defined by perceptions of injustice.

One of Kundera's earlier novels. Funny and very strange. I love the simplicity of the language, but complexity of the meaning. Again, if you don't like to think, don't read this book.
