“Now that I'm about halfway through, I have some thoughts. The early part of the book gives a strong impression of early 1800s style; now it's not quite as apparent. Am I getting used to the tone, or is it changing?

That all sounds cranky. There are just so many things going on and several intertwined stories. And I keep feeling like something bad is going to happen.
