“I was given this book to read by my headmaster. I think it was a test. I found the idea of the book to be very interesting but it ran out of steam at the end. I was ultimately very disappionted with it. It left many threads open as if there would be another book, a sequael which if there is i wont be bothered to read. I gave it back to its owner and said "Thank you" I wasnt brave enough to say it was written by someone how thought they had a brilliant idea but couldnt quite carry it off”

“I didn't expect the ending, but it makes a world of sense. Overall, a great read. I really loved all the foot notes. Reminded me of House of Leaves without the brutal mind assault. ”

“I actually listened to this one and fell in love with it. I keep thinking of the gentleman with the thistle down hair and the bottle green jacket. The idea that magic is real and in particular English Magic in 19th century England is so great and developed so fully. The line between our world and the world of Faerie seems very blurred now. ”

“After more than a month I finally finished it so hurrah to me! Well, it was quite an adventure, I must honestly say it dragged sometimes, there were a lot of footnotes, which were sub-stories, and there were really unnecessary characters, but generally it's an excellent piece of work. It starts off really slow then picks up the pace when Mr Norrell arrives, after a few more characters enter Jonathan Strange. They way Susanna Clarke wrote the characters was really brilliant, they're like no other. She was able to introduce them, give them life and sometimes death, and most of them are not what they seem. The magic done here was extensive and not really for kids. I like how she described the spells and how magic was used in the war, and the character manipulation of the fairy always referred to as "the gentleman with the thistle-down hair". The events were astounding and unpredictable, it's really a fresh treat than the usual 'abracadabra'.”
