My favorite new book in decades -- whenever I finish it, I have to force myself not turn right back to page one and start reading all over again. With this remarkable first novel, Susanna Clarke gives us a dazzling feat of 19th century English literary pastiche and a magical fantasy of the...

The first 880 pages were exposition, in my opinion. When the events started to snowball towards the climax, I expected it to be a lot more fulfilling. Instead it left me feeling like i had just spent the last month and a half being punished for something I hadn't done.

harry potter for adults (i like harry potter too). magic in a mature and "grown-up" kind of way. very original, eerie, and entertaining to the end.

I had high hopes and it is well thought out, but rather boring and just didn't really fulfill like it should have. If you put this much time and energy into reading a book it should be a little better.

An amazing work of art. Love this story! Full of dry wit, history, crisp writing and elegant characters.

This is the best fantasy novel I've read so far. It's dramatic, humorous and exciting. Also, I love magician-type characters. The power level of magic in the world of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell is well balanced. It's not too powerful like in high fantasy and it's fairly believable because magic isn't a cure-all to all life's problems as depicted in the book. The most entertaining bits in the book are the various footnotes and anecdotes which adds some realism. Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell belongs to the shelf of the fantasy aficionado. No wonder Neil Gaiman praises this book.

I enjoyed every single chapter of this book. It's witty, but subtly so, and interweaves magic and history in such a fun way! The characters are wonderful and vivid, the plot is mezmerizing, and... You HAVE to read the footnotes. They just make the entire book ten times better.

Extremely well imagined. Easy to get drawn into this work, so well done that you need to remind yourself that this is fiction. Read it-you'll see...

Magnicficent, flawed masterpiece. All worth reading it for moment of the Raven King's return.
