What are you reading? 3465 books / 8773 members / 26662 posts This group is for anyone, of any background or age group, who is interested in talking about...Books. Books you want to read, have read, are reading; books you have heard of and not yet read; books of any genre. You are welcome to ask for recommendations or opinions.

If you are plugging your new book, blog, group, etc., please only do this in the Shameless Self Promotion thread. If these are posted anywhere else, they will be deleted.

I hate The Da Vinci Code 42 books / 197 members / 127 posts * Do you feel like flipping out every time some ditzy guy or girl starts prattling on about what a deep meaningful experience The Da Vinci Code was?

* Did you power through it in an afternoon and wonder what was wrong with the person who recommended it to you?

* Do you put down new books after seeing a recommendation from Dan Brown on them?

Join this group and share well written new fiction.
What is the name of that Book??? 170 books / 388 members / 1000 posts It can be frustrating to try to recall a book when you no longer remember the author or the title, only snippets of detail. Here is a place to tell what you do remember and maybe someone else can identify the book for you.
Brilliant Babes (And Dudes) Who Read Selectively 668 books / 174 members / 10378 posts October Spooky Duel Book Group Read: Dracula...Bram Stoker and Interview With the Vampire...Anne Rice

There are people who will read any book that comes out, and there are people who won't read anything that is less than 200 years old. The Brilliant Babes (and Dudes) are in-between--we often turn up our noses at certain writers, but we have a keen appreciation for high-quality brain candy as well! We are a friendly group mixed with a bit of sharp sarcasm, a sprinkling of green Enabler Dust and a TBR pile a mile high.

If you are slightly toward the snobbish side of the book-lover's spectrum--if you love your Dickens but also love your Nora--then you've come to the right place! Our group is invite-only to preserve the correct mix of people, but if you want to join, drop Suze, Rob or Dragonfly a note and we will review your shelf. If you get a friend invite, accept it and we will invite you to join us! (Please note that none of the admins spends all day, every day online. It may be a few days before we can get back to you. Suze and Dragonfly especially go MIA for various reasons, so please be patient and it will be rewarded!) Also, please do NOT ask for an invitation if you don't plan on regularly posting. It does take us time to review new members, and we love new members who participate, but the posts are visible to all Shelfari members who just want to lurk. :)

BBD Blog: http://brilliantbabes.blogspot.com -- chock full of BBD goodness!

Note for all members: In the past, we have had people confuse "slightly snobby" with "raging literary a-holes." Although we do appreciate a good crack on a bad author, please refrain from knowingly insulting your fellow BBDs. We love Shakespeare, but we hate drama!
Daggerhome 12 books / 6 members / 2 posts It's just a group of RPG buddies based in the Chicago Area. We love our books!
Historical Fiction 64 books / 127 members / 50 posts I created this group for the poor, unrecognized souls that love history; just not enough to read it outright without some seasonings and marinade. My favorite writers for this genre are Michael and Jeff Shaara, Philip Kerr, Joseph Kanon and John le Carre to name a few. I am hoping that as a united group we can defend great fiction mixed with questionable historical facts! Thanks Nat
Audiobook Listeners 183 books / 109 members / 217 posts An excellent audiobook helps pass the time (and maybe save your sanity!) during a long road trip or workout or just keep you entertained while working on a project.

Feel free to post your favorites to the Group Shelf. The criteria is simply that you feel the audio presentation enhanced your enjoyment of the book more so than if you had read it. Recommendations for children, teens and adults are welcome!
24 Book Challenge + Chat 820 books / 81 members / 2815 posts The 24 Book Challenge group is currently at full capacity; thank you for your interest.

"In the case of good books, the point is not how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you.", Mortimer Adler

*This is a group for book lovers who prefer to take an under-promise and over-deliver approach to their reading. It's also for those of us who quake at the thought of "committing" to read 50 books in a twelve month period.

The challenge: Set a goal for yourself to read and enjoy 2 books each month.(If 1 would be a s-t-r-e-t-c-h goal for you, that's great too! If you crave more than 2, go for it. It's your challenge :-)

If you have been keeping track of all that you've read since January 2008, feel free to include those books towards your goal. If you haven't been keeping track, simply begin now.

How it works: Put your name in the subject line of a new post, and start to add your book list. From that point on you can add to your list by replying to the first post in your thread. If you prefer to keep your thread free of others' questions or comments then you may want to include this request in your original post title (e.g. "No comments please"). If you would like questions or comments within your thread, why not include "Comments welcome" in the title? If you feel inspired to write mini-reviews or comments on any book in your list, please do. Whatever feels right for you!

The group shelf:You are also invited to add your 24 + books to the group shelf. If you did write a comment or review please also add this to your book on the shelf. In an effort to keep things simple, we're only using the "Books We've Read" shelf.

Please drop us a note if you have any questions or suggestions for improving the group. We'd love to hear from you!

Punctuation for sticklers 19 books / 2 members / 7 posts This group is for all the sticklers out there who bemoan the sight of a misplaced comma, cringe at a sentence that has the audacity to begin with a subordinating conjunction, and simply shrivel up and die as a result of the abuse wrought on the hapless semicolon. This is dedicated to all those who: leap six feet into the air at the mere mention of "Eats, Shoots & Leaves;" are lobbying to have a statue of Lynne Truss erected in all English-speaking countries across the globe; and those who squabble for hours on end about whether or not the Oxford Comma is justified. Three cheers for punctuation! Oh, one more thing: it's a huge plus if you LOATHE chick lit, shudder at the very mention of it, and would rather be subjected to the flames of hell than have the grime of that filth touting itself as "literature" stain your fingertips. Ugh.
MMG Book Club 16 books / 15 members / 95 posts Book lovers of MMG =)

Let's keep this group active for our own sanity (haha so we can all enjoy being bookworms at hindi puro work work work lang ang iniisip).

We made the group restricted so only actual officemates (or people we know) can join the group.
Fantasy and Sci-fi Fanatics 1697 books / 2047 members / 2561 posts I am personally addicted to fantasy and sci-fi and I created this group for people to discuss Fantasy and Sci-fi books that they have read.

I have found myself, more often than not, searching for a really good fantasy or sci-fi book, but to no avail. Starting a group not only enables me, and you, to find great books, but it also is a great way to discuss likes and dislikes about these books.

Just a warning, I will also put realistic-fiction books on the group shelf if I feel that they are as good as a fantasy or sci-fi book. MEOW!!!!!

***NOTICE***
If you are a member, or just a random person, please put any sci-fi or fantasy book that you *LOVE* on the group shelf, please!

Another thing, plez post discussions or reply to one, i'd love to hear your opinions.

Eat Good Food, Read Good Books 88 books / 6 members / 25 posts Our book club picks books and then meets at restaurants to discuss. We try to match the food as much as possible to the books. Historical Fiction 949 books / 1407 members / 3980 posts I was shocked there was no "historical fiction" group so I'm going to try this.
Your books can be from any era and style as long as they are historical fiction!
I am always on the lookout for new books so please add/suggest as many as you like!
As you can see from my shelf and the group's shelf we have a loose interpretation of what is "historical fiction" and a varied taste in books.
Questions about how to use shelfari should be adressed to that group please.
Authors are welcome to post, but please do not use this group to advertise for your book unless it caters to our interests!
Another small request from me......Please keep all discussions civil and try to respect other people's views and opinions while posting on this group.
If you decide to join...welcome!

White Rabbit Books 23 books / 2 members / 0 posts Sometimes just picking up a book, opening it, and reading the first paragraph will send me off after it and down the rabbit hole into Wonderland. These are the books that result in all-nighters, missed bus/train stops and frustrated lovers.

Mark you, not all of my favorite books are White Rabbits. Some take at least 100 pages to hook me into an alternate reality. Some few, however, grabbed me from page 1 and didn't release me until the Author Blurb on the jacket.

I'm wondering if other avid readers have similar experiences. I guess some experience this literary dislocation more often than I, and some others always have to be courted and coaxed into a new world. Perhaps the phenomenon is recognizable, however, and I for one enjoy the sensation so much that I'd like to learn what books led others outside of our world into a new space.

I'm also interested in looking at different aspects of the White Rabbit. Does the seductiveness lie in the book itself, in the circomstances of the Reader, combinations of both, and so on..

I hope my reading colleagues are as fascinated by this type of reading experience as I am and will chime in.

Respectfully,
Sonja B

Welcome to Across The Pond!

Do you ever find yourself suddenly walking silly walks or humming a certain Lumberjack tune? Do you scurry to the kitchen at noon for ladyfingers and herbal tea? Do you read literature from or about Tudor or Regency periods? Are you constantly flipping to BBC America to check for new episodes of Dr. Who, Robin Hood, or MI-5? Did you love Braveheart, Pride and Prejudice, or the Harry Potter movies? Do you ever suddenly find yourself speaking in a British accent using the words "bloke" or "codswallop" from time to time? Or maybe you just feel you were born in the wrong country? This group was made for anyone who feels a special connection to the geography, history, culture, and traditions of the U.K. Discussions are open to everyone and can be about anything from English literature, your favourite Beatle, or how you spent your summer vacation touring famous castles. Whether the discussions are serious and thoughful or silly and playful, have fun! *For any Shelfarian who has stumbled upon this group out of curiosity, please feel free to join us (especially you Brit's!)!*
Anglophiles Anonymous 655 books / 66 members / 26261 posts

Please read this note in its entirety: This is a private group, mainly to keep out Lurkers, Tittlebats, Boojums and Snarks. If you’d like to join, please do not send a message to the "Group Administrator". Instead, use the Shelfari "Search Members" function to seek out my housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers. Leave your card and a letter of introduction with her, explaining why you wish to gambol amongst us and what you’d bring to the conversation in terms of your obsession with all literary things Angl-ish. She's a bit of a cold fish but she'll see I get the message.

Much Prized: Participation in our Group Reads, the ability to write a coherent sentence, a sense of humour, an appetite for stimulating intercourse and a deep and abiding love for British literature. The possession of a ridiculous British alias is much admired.

Much Frowned Upon: Lurking. All those found guilty of Lurking will be expunged once a year using the most shocking medieval methods.

A Message from The Most Hon. The Marquess of Manleigh:

“I must ask anyone entering the house never to contradict me or differ from me in any way, as it interferes with the functioning of the gastric juices and prevents my sleeping at night.” -- Posted at the entrance of Renishaw Hall, home of Sir George Reresby Sitwell

Dear Besotted Reader of British Literature,

Allow me to introduce you to our little circle, an oasis for those of you out there who suspect you’ve been born in the wrong country. You pale, lost souls who wish you could pepper your prose with spellings like “civilised” and “sense of humour” without eliciting raised eyebrows. You who stare at the clock wistfully at half-past four and bemoan the fact that no steaming pot of tea and scrummy comestibles are nigh. You know who you are. You find yourself spending inordinate amounts of time reading the Brontës, Austen, Dickens, Eliot, Woolf, Waugh, Mitford, Wodehouse and basically any other writer with a British accent. You curse fate because you weren’t a member of the Bloomsbury group. To your chagrin, you’ve never found a body in your library. You long to find others of your ilk, soul-mates with whom you can prattle on about British literature, poetry, cinema and telly without receiving blank stares in return. My dears, you are not alone.

Step into the drawing room and tell us all about it. Would you like one lump, or two?

Yours cordially,

Sir Terence ("Tinky") Egbert Ethelred Edward George Kitty Carlisle, KQHB
1st Marquess of Manleigh, 14th Viscount Manleigh and Knight of the Queen's Handbag

Magical Realism 19 books / 7 members / 19 posts Magical Realism Literature is where the fantastical, the elaborate exaggeration meets reality without taking off onto a pure fantasy. According to Gabriel Garcia Marquez "it is usually characterized by elements of the fantastic woven into the story with a deadpan sense of presentation." It is commonly found in Latin American literature by authors such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Paulo Coelho, and Isabel Allende.
