Jon Krakauer is an insightful, thorough writer who also manages to convey his accounts in an interesting manner. This particular book is both a true crime story and a brief history of the LDS church. It is worth reading for its relevance to the dangers of religious fundamentalism and the strange beginnings of religion in general.

A remarkable story of religion gone extreme.

Scary scary. Well-told story about one particular crime, and also a primer on the Mormon faith.

But I think the author was a little too easy on the larger Mormon faith and on organized religion in general. He excused certain things because of the power of faith. But when "faith" stands in marked contrast to everything else in the world, what then?

I don’t know which I was most disturbed by: how far Mormons are from God or Krakauer’s God-less worldview that equates Mormonism with Christianity.

This is the first non fiction book I have read in awhile. I had absolutely no idea all of this went on. It is truely frightening. Very interesting story about how the LDS split and formed fundamentalist sectors that run entire towns. Extremely bizzare; it was like reading something by Stephen King, only it is all true.

After reading this, my husband and I did some more reserach on this time and it was very interesting. I learned a lot, I was qripped by some of the horrific brutal episodes of that time. When I shared this with a friend who is mormon, she had many contradicting statements. It lead to a very lively debate.

Gripping account of a gruesome murder and the history of Mormonism, both mainstream and fundamentalist.

If you are inclined to join the Mormon faith, this book will make you think twice. A troubling look into the methods used to gather the hopeless into the flock. The history lessons are fascinating and you can't help but think, "What are these people thinking". Well done.

I found this book to be an absolute page-turner...both intriguing and disturbing on many levels. Hey, is Rulon Jeffs still on the FBI most wanted list, or have they caught him?

One of the most horrifically interesting books I've ever read! I think about this book constantly and read it quite some time ago.
