A surprising glimpse into the history and beliefs of the Mormon faith and how some fundamentalists twisted this faith (like they do almost all others) and this causes them to take actions that are not good. The murder in that this book is about comes from FLDS faith which prompts some men to...

Scary as far as content, difficult to read quickly, more like a study book

From the perspective of someone who wants to understand more about the settlement of the American West (and Utah in particular), this is certainly an interesting book and would be an enjoyable read for those whom are critical of organized religions in general. As Krakauer comments in his final chapter ("Author's Notes") what makes the Mormon religion interesting to study is that it was formed during an era of record keeping and documentation as opposed to the ancient religions (Judaism, Christianity, etc.). Were one to extrapolate the heavily documented Mormon foundations in order to understand the creation of other religions, it could give us a whole new interpretation of the origins of the ancient faiths.

An interesting overview of the history of the Morman Church in America and the radical fundamentalist offshoots that practice polygamy.

I don't like to speak too much about politics and religion, but this book is an eye opener.
