Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith

by Jon Krakauer

Jon Krakauer’s literary reputation rests on insightful chronicles of lives conducted at the outer limits. He now shifts his focus from extremes of physical adventure to extremes of religious belief within our own borders, taking readers inside isolated American communities where some 40,000 Mormon Fundamentalists still practice polygamy. Defying both civil authorities and the Mormon... (read more)

Okay ever one knows right that these crazy people are not part of the LDS church and that they are just a break off crazy cult as evidence by the fact that they killed people. also isn't that just creepy reading a book about murders.

I thought this was a quite well written book, even if it felt a bit disjointed through the beginning. The individual story lines through the novel gave a great idea of the mindset of people in fundamentalist religions. I wish I could find more information on what happened to the Lafferty brothers since the end of the book...

This story should be a must read along with Shattered Dreams. It is so relevant to what is happening in Texas right now. We need to wake up!!! We are breeding our own native version of a Christian Fundamentalism that is based in violence towards the body-mind-soul.

For another interesting view of Mormonism, read American Massacre. It's about a historic massacre of a wagon train by Mormons in Utah.

A great introduction to the world of fundamentaists in our midst. Although this book is specifically about fundamentalist Mormons, A lot of the same mindset exists in the fundamentalist Christian sects

Yeah, it's kind of scary how many whackos there are out there. Good thing to know that these people that Krakauer talks about are all Mormon Fundamentalists (which there are relatively few of) and that none of the crazy stuff applies to actual Mormons (which there are quite a few of. Ten million or something like that). The book was easy to read (except for the somewhat grisly murder scenes) but I've heard from a lot of people that he got a bunch of his history wrong. Sounds like he should have done a lot more research.
