JP: Poul Anderson only got better with time. This layered, epic tale of a few immortals from different periods of human history pulses with a stylistic vitality and rich understanding of human nature in it's many diverse forms that Anderson simply was not capable of in his earliest work. This tapestry of immortals resists the urge to have endless gratuitous cameos by various historical figures - Richelieu is the only one I can recall - and instead tells a compelling story of people who are...

I am a big Poul Anderson fan, but this was a disappointment. I must say that on my second reading it improved, so maybe I just didn't get it.
