I learned much from this book. I still remember that the Greeks define happiness as "the full use of your powers along lines of excellence." This comment was written shortly before President Kennedy was assassinated. It brought back many memories of that era.

One of the most extraordinary books about American history ever written.

This is the story of the men who sold the Vietnam war to LBJ. It is a heartbreaking tale of hubris, blindness and a tenacity to continue on with a war when everything tells you to stop. Lots of modern parallels.

I'm having trouble getting through this book. On the plus ide, the sketches of the characters are fascinating, and I'm learning a great deal about the era and the people. On the negative, overall, I'm finding it tedious. Keeping track of who's who by last name, especially when they've only been mentioned briefly 54 pages beforehand causes me to do a lot of back-scanning. I WILL finish this book, dagnabbit! :)

The best part about this giant of a book is the in-depth portrayal of all the main characters....
The brilliance of Bundy, the cockiness of McNamara, the earthiness of Johnson left an indelible impression when I read it. Definitely recommended for anyone with more than a passing interest in American politics

Wanna know how we messed up Vietnam? This book gives all the dirty details. It's too bad no one was really listening at the right time. Seems familiar huh? Written by one of the best authors of the 20th century.

Simply an amazing book. Depending on how you viewed Vietnam before you read it, potentially life-changing, especially with its parallels (and points of divergence) with the climate that surrounds Iraq decision-making.
