I agree with spcug. The film was not that bad but the book itself is way better than that. This book has a very special charm which keeps readers reading it.

I saw the film a couple of years ago, in German on the german tv and found it very good, I live in Switzerland and got a copy of the book from our local bookshop, also in German. I found the film good and the book as well.

The film made from this book is A W F U L. Read the book. Some of the chapters can stand by themselves as short stories or plays, it is so well written and characterized. I read this in Germany in 1963, and can remember how I felt when I read it to this day.
