Kafka on the Shore

Kafka on the Shore (Vintage International)

by Haruki Murakami

The opening pages of a Haruki Murakami novel can be like the view out an airplane window onto tarmac. But at some point between page three and fifteen--it's page thirteen in Kafka On The Shore--the deceptively placid narrative lifts off, and you find yourself breaking through clouds at a tilt, no longer certain where the plane is headed or if the laws of flight even apply.

DC Trendsetters 43 books / 2 members / 0 posts We are proud to call ourselves DC's greatest bookclub. And we are only half joking.
World Lit 316 books / 344 members / 200 posts This group is to share and discuss your world literature favorites -- especially if they're off the beaten path. If you love books by non-Western writers, then this is the group for you!
Books I have read so far in 2007 208 books / 19 members / 4 posts Just keeping a record of what I read x
The Murakami Zone 57 books / 276 members / 295 posts The Murakami meets Rod Serling genre (and many things in between)....including lost letters.
Audible Books to recommend 258 books / 203 members / 512 posts I thought it would be nice to have a list of books that people have read that are on audible (i.e., downloads from Audible.com, library CDs, etc).

Often I have to go from book review back to Audible.com to see if it's there before I can check it off to my Wish List (right now I am listening to my books for the most part). I don't like cassette tapes, however, and I have seen where a book may be available on tape but not CD or download. Downloads are less expensive, too. Starlet
Brilliant Babes (And Dudes) Who Read Selectively 639 books / 165 members / 7779 posts So, what makes you a selective reader? If you like Dan Brown, Danielle Steele, Nicholas Sparks, or similar works, you MAY not be into this club. We are a group of intelligent persons who love both thought-provoking literature and quality brain candy. Actually, I mainly started it for myself and my friends, but anybody can apply if you think you're down with the Brilliant Babes--just send someone a note explaining why YOU think you are a brilliant babe (or dude) who reads selectively. This is a super-casual group. Anybody can suggest a book to read, anybody can add books to the reading list. We welcome any and all intelligent book discussion (not to mention whining about books we hated or gushing about books we loved). And don't worry if you have a really embarrassing book on your shelves...we all have skeletons in the closet.

To ask for an invite please DO NOT use the admin message box, leave a note on the profile pages of either rob or Suze...we will get back to you as soon as we can...thanks for your patience...and if you insist on asking for an invite via the group admin message box you will be ignored...so don't. Also, please remember that, although we TRY to get to everyone's requests in a timely manner, we do have other responsibilities that sometimes delay us from looking at your shelves. Your patience will be rewarded

A note about being snobs: As hard as it is to believe, with all of the nice people here on Shelfari, we get an e-mail once every week or two saying that we are snobs. That really just depends on your definition of a snob. Yes, this is a private group. Yes, we jokingly call ourselves brilliant. Yes, we have rather defined reading tastes that cut out a lot of mass-market fiction. Does that truly make us snobs? We hand-picked many members of our initial group around what we like to read or think we'd like to read. I don't think this makes us so much snobs as "people who want to discuss the kind of stuff that they like to read and don't care to discuss stuff that they don't like to read." (shrugs) We're pretty accepting. So, before sending us mean e-mails, see above for the joining process. And just remember: If you don't make it in, you probably haven't read the same books that we've all read and we'd have nothing to talk about!

A special note from the admin: We want everyone to have a great time here. All we expect is that everyone plays nice! Good-humored sarcasm is in; putting down or harassing our members is not, and we won't hesitate to remove a repeat offender from the group.

Note on the threads: please feel free to go back and resurrect any of the earlier threads that you find interesting...

50 Book Challenge! 2902 books / 2865 members / 16253 posts When asked about the new Amazon Kindle product, Steve Jobs CEO of Apple computer had this to say:

“It doesn’t matter how good or bad the product is, the fact is that people don’t read anymore,” he said. “Forty percent of the people in the U.S. read one book or less last year. The whole conception is flawed at the top because people don’t read anymore.”

Welcome to the the 50 Book Challenge, where we fly in the face of Steve Jobs.

Basically .... the challenge is to read 50 books in one year. OR ... establish a goal for yourself more or less, it's up to you, just because we say 50 books doesn't mean that has to be your goal too.

Start a thread, WITH YOUR NAME IN THE SUBJECT OF YOUR ORIGINAL POST, and log your books. It is a very good idea to bookmark (when in your post, add it to your internet browser's favorites) your post for easy location for future updates. Things move quickly around here.

If you haven't been keeping track of the books you've read, start when you join.

Thanks for being here and have fun. If you have any suggestions or questions, feel free to contact me.

"In the case of good books, the point is not how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you.", Mortimer Adler

*This is a group for book lovers who prefer to take an under-promise and over-deliver approach to their reading. It's also for those of us who quake at the thought of "committing" to read 50 books in a twelve month period.

The challenge: Set a goal for yourself to read and enjoy 2 books each month.(If 1 would be a s-t-r-e-t-c-h goal for you, that's great too! If you crave more than 2, go for it. It's your challenge :-)

If you have been keeping track of all that you've read since January 2008, feel free to include those books towards your goal. If you haven't been keeping track, simply begin now.

How it works: Put your name in the subject line of a new post, and start to add your book list. From that point on you can add to your list by replying to the first post in your thread. If you prefer to keep your thread free of others' questions or comments then you may want to include this request in your original post title (e.g. "No comments please"). If you would like questions or comments within your thread, why not include "Comments welcome" in the title? If you feel inspired to write mini-reviews or comments on any book in your list, please do. Whatever feels right for you!

The group shelf:You are also invited to add your 24 + books to the group shelf. If you did write a comment or review please also add this to your book on the shelf. In an effort to keep things simple, we're only using the "Books We've Read" shelf.

Please drop us a note if you have any questions or suggestions for improving the group. We'd love to hear from you!

What is Bookay-Ukay?

Book: A book is a set or collection of written, printed, illustrated, or blank sheets, made of paper, parchment, or other material, usually fastened together to hinge at one side. A single sheet within a book is called a leaf, and each side of a leaf is called a page.

Ukay-Ukay: A Thrift-Store, secondhand clothing store... A place to buy secondhand stuff.

Book + Ukay-Ukay = Bookay-Ukay, a place where you can buy, borrow, lend second-hand books and Ideas as well....

MOTTO:

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING GOOD TO SAY...YOU CAN STILL SAY IT!

We are a group of anti-corporate, poor and struggling petti-intellectuals from our beloved third-world planet, the Philippines, who love to rummage the dark corners of Recto and the dusty shelves of Booksale and Books And Mags (Though, occasionally there are books stolen from The Japan Foundation,Goethe Institute and National Bookstore), for Knowledge,Wisdom and Literary Treasures (and some occasional Porn)....We are selective readers and We sell books deemed unworthy of our Divine Personal Libraries (though, most of the time we sell even the most precious of our possessions, due to lack of money.) We are also known to sell books at very affordable, negotiable prices at the UP Sunken Garden( during the Lantern Parade or the UP Fair, most of us are Filipinos from PNU ( The founders, dunno about the rest)), But, we are a growing family and Everyone from any school, creed, country or belief is welcome to join the merry mob. Not just Filipino we are global...So, Pinoy, Pinoys or not, everyone can riot with us...

We also love to debate and do intellectual talks while eating Free Food at Film Festivals, Art Exhibits and Art and Cultural Festivals (Instituto Cervantes serves the BEST FREE FOOD as well as CCP)..At times we also cook, thanks to the inspiration of Haruki Murakami,Esquivel and Hare Krishna...

We Love Music especially if we can steal and download them for free...We love to read while listening to Easy-Listening Crust and Grindcore Music.

We are pirates and vandals and Licensed Teachers...And we love to eat, drink and The Beatles..

To order books, just give us the titles, and if we have 'em..you can have 'em...

Here are some things you can enjoy doing here:

YOU CAN TRADE, SELL, LEND or BORROW BOOKS.

YOU CAN POST YOUR, RANTS, RAVES and OPINIONS.

YOU CAN POST SCHEDULES OF EVENTS,CONCERTS, FILM FESTS etc. (AND EBs OF OTHER GROUPS)

YOU CAN POST SHORT STORIES, POETRY and ESSAYS.

THE ROLES OF THE ADMINS:
1. The Admins are randomly selected (except for the founders.), so that means we are all strangers, and we do hold different beliefs and philosophies in life.

2. The Admins have the right to promote anyone into an admin.

3. The Admin should promote shelfari.com, and invite people to join the group.

4. It is our role to promote Merry Chaos, exchange of opinions or whatever we can do to make this boring discussion group Fun.

5. Ewan, ko basta bahala kayong lahat sa buhay nyo.

6. First rule of Fight Club, you don't talk about Fight Club.

7. Tumawid lamang sa tamang tawiran.

8. For other questions, Itanong Mo Kay Soriano, Bibliya Ang Sasagot.

What is BookMooch? from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BookMooch
BookMooch is an international, on-line book exchange community founded by John Buckman in July 2006. Membership is open to anyone and is free. BookMooch allows its users to exchange books using a points system. Members earn points by adding books to their inventories, by sending books to other members, and by providing feedback when they receive books. The points earned can then be used to “mooch” books from other members. All books “cost” the same number of points, with a multiple point surcharge for international mooches. Members may opt to send books only within their own country, worldwide, or worldwide upon request.
