Haruki Murakami’s Kafka on the Shore is one such book, that was a joy to read. I generally dislike reading translations and I don’t particularly like coming-of-age, voyage genres. But despite being...” see full review » see other reviews » |

i think this book move me , and it's not just an entertainment , the imagination of Murakami can take you to another world and let you see the world as he seen it and write it for you, and it is beautiful. ”
“It's not my cup of tea - numerous supernatural unexplained events happen and then the book ends. I've read that the author meant to "ask more questions than to answer" ... but there is nothing to explain - it's just a runaway imagination.”

And I admit, I was seduced by the thought of reading a cool, contemporary Japanese author who writes books with titles such as "The Wind-up Bird Chronicle". so I gave this a real crack, but found myself entirely disconnected from all the magical realism.
Surely there comes a point where one's disbelief becomes so suspended that the story ceases to lose any sense of meaning or relevance whatsoever. The actual Johnny Walker murdering cats and eating their hearts? Why not have him naked from the waist down dancing the Macarena at the same time - what difference would it make?! I have a hard enough time understanding what goes on in this universe without having to be puzzled by the events in parallel others, or the insane imaginings of a cat-whisperer, or whatever the hell else supposedly explains the plot in this book. Did nothing for me.”
“beautiful conflicts. but the ending was a bit placid.”

Something between a pure western surrealism and -what I call- traditional Japanese magical realism. The story contains unbelievable beings which you have no way but believing them! With a great taste of humor in its background. And finally, you can hear the music amplified beneath its every single line. ”
