The Hotel New Hampshire (Ballantine Reader's Circle)

by John Irving

"The first of my father's illusions was that bears could survive the life lived by human beings, and the second was that human beings could survive a life led in hotels."

So says John Berry, son of a hapless dreamer, brother to a cadre of eccentric siblings, and chronicler of the lives lived, the loves experienced, the deaths met, and the myriad strange and wonderful times encountered... (read more)

Overview: Groups

Movie Versions of Books 77 books / 101 members / 45 posts This group is about all the movies that have been made from books. Were they true to the spirit of the novel? And what about books adapted from movies? Would you watch a movie based on a book you loved or avoid it?
The Southern Literary Critics Sunday School Class and Serial Killer Task Force 65 books / 15 members / 3 posts This group is open for everyone who is stupid enough to join. However, there is a catch, there is a twenty dollar membership fee, payable to my offshore account in the Cayman Islands. After members have joined, they are encouraged to get as many new members to join and pay the fee as possible. Existing members can also buy the position of "High Member", High Members have greater priveleges, and what they say has more clout, than "Low Members", low members are dirt, and should be considered untouchables. I don't believe in the middle class, as their is no point to have one.

Now, High Members can join the prestigous Macon Community Center Knitting Club for a sizeable fee of course. A select few may get in free however, if they agree to become "Promoters", people who agree to promote us at a full time level, and sell memberships, as an incentive they get a small cut of the money they bring in, and, if they get us a new Promoter, then they get a portion of his profits, so they are encouraged to get as many new promoters as possible. Their membership in the group, position as High Member, and spot on the Macon Community Center Knitting Club, really do not only pay for themselves, but also help them quit their jobs, and live off the five thousand dollars a month that they enevitably end up making. If you want to be successful in life, then join this group and don't be a tightwad.
Book VS. Movie 397 books / 957 members / 1155 posts This group is all about the differences between the books and the movies. Join the group and tell what your favorite is the Book OR the Movie. Add books that have turned into movies if you like. ENJOY!!!!

If you want to join the group just ask me or Hollz middle to become our friend and then add you to the group.

Happy Reading and Watching!
"WTF?" 120 books / 730 members / 2180 posts Ever started reading a book that everyone else seems to love and you just don't get the attraction? Or picked up a book from an author you usually love and wondered if the latest offering was written while talking on the phone? Or perhaps you read the first three chapters of a book and still can't figure out what's going on, who the characters are, the basic plot, or even the purpose of the book at all? What happens when all your friends recommended this great book that you thought was the most poorly written waste of perfectly good trees you ever read?

Welcome! You have found a place to vent your frustrations, discuss your opinions, review justifying arguments, or generally get satisfaction for time wasted on reading a book that just left you asking...WTF????
