A delightful Regency romance made even more delicious for being read by Richard Armitage, who is bewitching as Sylvester and unexpectedly good at voicing everyone else. I highly recommend this audio version!

“ Georgette Heyer, the author, invented the concept of the "Regency Romance" novel. Starting writing professionally in 1922 when she was still in her teens, she wrote dozens of books, most but not all in the Regency genre. Her role in creating this type of light, enjoyable novel, almost Austen-esque in style, (and set in Jane Austen's own time period) is undisputed. She studied old letters, diaries, books of the time, to get the feeling for the way the people talked, thought, interacted with the opposite sex, dressed, treated servants, and on...Any one of her Regency books introduces the reader to the actual slang and terminology of the people who lived in that era. This book---and I don't want to get into the plot--is one of her best Regency stories. Fun, witty, and thoroughly enjoyable. (For those interested in the Regency era, read the non-fiction book by V. Murray, "An Elegant Madness, High Society in Regency England." )” This book is one of my top favorites among Heyer's Regency Romances. There are subplots, characters who could have come out of Charles Dicken's work, people losing their chance due to miscommunication, unrequited love due to failure to be honest....a fun, enjoyable book.

I hesitated over giving this one 5 stars. It's good. Very good. There were no problems with it at all. But I guess I'm just not seeing what makes everyone drool over Heyer so much. Perhaps they just don't read much good Regency romance. That's the problem when something's over-praised. I was expecting to have an "OMG, this is so GOOD" reaction, but instead I just liked it very much. Maybe it's the historical context--because nobody was writing Regency romances when this was written. Anyway, we have a young independent woman, a matchmaking mama, a duke, a young nephew, a self-centered widowed sister-in-law. It's a very nice story.

I picked this up for beach-reading on a friend's reccomendation. What a lark! Sylvester is light and fun, and it made me laugh out loud. Wonderful escapism!

Okay, I'm a sucker for a good Regency romance! And other than Jane Austin, Georgette Heyer's are the best! And this one is by far my favorite. I don't know how many times I've read it, and it's always good. Heyer tells a good story, and tells it in the vernacular of the times, and gets the characters right on! What more is there?
