“Meh. I'm not sure I buy his concept of emotions. So far my favorite theories are Gerald Edelman and Damascio's. ”

It’s fascinating stuff. It seems like I actually intuitively know much of this, but the little “micro expressions” that let you know how someone feels are fascinating and mostly new. For instance, to tell if someone is truly happy and has a true “broad” smile (as opposed to a Duchenne smile), look for the fold of their upper lid at the edge of their eyes. Some people can even fake the crow’s feet, but that extra little fold is hard to fake. Contempt is shown by a crooked smile, with one corner drawn up. True sadness causes the eyebrows to pull up in the middle, surprise is usually shown by an open mouth shaped like an O, and anger is evident when the lips are pressed together. Very interesting stuff, and very clearly written. He also talks about how to control our emotions and to alter what triggers our emotions.”

What I wanted to know was how to distinguish the emotion but there is some philosophical contents in the front. Contents was good and really useful, but i was lost my interest little bit by that. ”
“Great book. Well written, easy to follow. Offers a lot of scientific research into humans universally shared emotions, facial signs of emotion in others, and how to recognize the feelings and expressions in ourselves. As little as this counts, I highly recommend this book.”

As a non-researcher, Ekman has presented the material in digestible layman terms. After reading the book, the reader understands some important emotions and how they are expressed on our faces, in our voice, and in our body, with emphasis being placed on facial expressions. My only complaint is that I wish the book was a bit longer with more pictures of the facial expressions; a minor complaint.
Most importantly, the material is extremely useful. The information can be applied immediately to improve your life and relationships.”
“a lil techncal but immensely interesting !!”
