An excellent account of middle east politics from 1967-90. Some of Friedman's insights are indeed thought provoking and are very well rounded.Take it with a pinch of salt that it is probably impossible to paint a complete picture of happenings and draw inferences about a place that is so deeply rooted in the legends and folklore of so many people, about a time of so much conflict. Nonetheless this is an excellent read.

i don't know, maybe because I grew up away from the ravaging policies of both governments but still in the middle east, I always find Friedman's assessments basic and without nuance. His book is not without its valid points though, but it takes patience to stiff through all of it to find the gem(s).

This book was the reason I backpacked through Syria. For anyone interested in middle east politics and history, this is a great book.
