Sphere

by Michael Crichton

Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton is possibly the best science teacher for the masses since H.G. Wells, and Sphere, his thriller about a mysterious spherical spaceship at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, is classic Crichton. A group of not-very-complex characters (portrayed in the film by Sharon Stone, Dustin Hoffman, Samuel L. Jackson, and Queen Latifah) assemble to solve a cleverly... (read more)

I feel, and probably always will, that this is one of Crichton's best novels, right after Andromeda Strain. The mysterious aspect of his suspense writing is still alive and well, and the plot really draws you in, wondering what will happen next, and next, and next again. I usually reread this about once every few years, I like it so much.

I was on a Crichton kick and I picked Sphere up from the library to read. I really enjoyed it. I liked the twists and turns and I felt that the story was involved enough to keep me guessing and wanting for more.,...It had a very 2000 leagues under the sea meets space odyssey kind of feel to it. I was so excited when they decided to make it a movie and then MORE than extremely disappointed in the movie when I finally saw it. The movie was a joke.,..So if you didn't like the movie don't let that stop you from reading the book.

Time-Travel... Existence of alien powers... The anthropomorphic principle... The Tapestry of human survival...

When the United States defense forces discover a space-ship made of an unknown metal, and scientifically proven to have landed on Earth somewhere in the thirteenth century buried deep inside the Pacific, a team of scientists including renowned psychologist Norman Johnson was rushed to examine the scenario.

What they find inside defies sanity. Was the spaceship actually an alien craft or human? Is the real objective of the defense forces something different from what is visible? And what exactly is the strange spherical object that the scientists find in the spaceship?

Enter Sphere. One of Michael Crichton's most spell-binding yarns that makes you bite your nails till the last page is turned... and then some...

A really eery story. It kind of freaked me out. That's a telltale sign of a good book.

I think the trick is to wish that the sphere would make you capable of controlling the sphere.

Very disappointing. He creates a "hard sf" premise -- unusual artifact on ocean floor -- and turns it into a "soft sf" story -- it makes everybody crazy. Some of the psychological concepts are interesting, but he sets up so many questions about the artifact that never get answered. And the conclusion makes no sense. Crichton has written much better.

Great book! Very action-packed. He really brings the characters to life and was able to reel me in. It was quite a page-turner. Now I want to see the movie, which I didn't know existed until I had read this.

One of my earliest Michael Crichton books, used to love this one.. Chilling story on what could happen if our random thoughts started coming true.. And a great ending.
