A really eery story. It kind of freaked me out. That's a telltale sign of a good book.

Very disappointing. He creates a "hard sf" premise -- unusual artifact on ocean floor -- and turns it into a "soft sf" story -- it makes everybody crazy. Some of the psychological concepts are interesting, but he sets up so many questions about the artifact that never get answered. And the conclusion makes no sense. Crichton has written much better.
