I love all of Sharon Shinn's novels. This one is wonderful. Averie is a young heiress, the daughter of a general and is betrothed to a military man. There is a war going on and she goes to live in the country where her father and fiancee are fighting. She befriends a young soldier who comes from a conquered country. Then she slowly falls in love with him instead. This is a wonderfully invented world.
