It's really quite wonderful and quickly became one of my favorites. The tale of Josie and Jack is such an interesting one; their relationship is at times loving, beautiful, twisted, painful and ultimately deadly. Ever since I read it I've been recommending it to any friend who will listen. The book is in the first-person voice of Josie, and she's a fine narrator. However, I think it would make for an good companion piece to this novel to have the same story told over again-from her brother Jack's point of view. There were times when Josie and Jack were separated from each other for days, weeks, even months-it would be interesting to find out where Jack was and what he'd done and seen. But even better I'd love to read his thoughts on his sister Josie and their complicated relationship.”

Loving with a dysfunctional father, Raeburn, who shows no emotional support, the two have learned to rely on each other for everything.
After destroying a plot of their father's, the two run off & try to live on the road. They con & scheme until they find themselves living with Lily, a well-to-do young girl who likes to live life dangerously. But soon she tries of sharing Jack & starts trying to push Josie out of the house. This brings the whole story to an unforgettable climax.
A haunting tale of sibling love with no boundaries. ”
“Really superb first novel that blends Gothic - declining family in W Pa, brother and sister who seem VERY close - with modern. The first-person narrator, a teenage girl named Josie, is charming and believable, even in her sometimes-drunken stupors/decadence. Maybe especially then. The portraits of Jack and his girlfriends are carefully-drawn, realistic and memorable; Ms Braffet captures the essence of New York City from a youngster's POV, and the finale of the book is artfully done. Leaves one yearning for more...
If I have to pick on something, it would be the middle of the book, where scene changes gave me a jumpy feeling. I think she could have done the whole book in just two settings - the house in PA and Jack's girlfriend's apt in NY. But this is nit-picking. This is a VERY promising young author!”
“Reminiscent of Flowers in the Attic, but with much better, more lovely writing. It was very dark.”
