This may be my favorite book of all time. There is something about this story that I have loved since I was 12 years old and I have never grown tired of it, even though I have read it at least 20 times. My two daughters, who read a LOT, read it when they were younger and it is their favorite too. Kate is a wonderful, spunky heroine who calls it as she sees it, even when life is not fair and she is blamed for her beautiful sister's mistakes. When she is banished from Princess Elizabeth's court to live at a mysterious old castle, or gard, in the Elvenwood, she meets Christopher, who is blamed for his neice's disappearance into a well while he was watching her. But was he really to blame? Kate stumbles onto something that has been going on for centuries and discovers the truth. Though she and Christopher are held by a race that dwells under the ground, she stays true to herself but will it be enough to save the day? I love this book. In fact, I think I will go home and read it again!

Grounded in 16th century English history, simmering in fairies, this book uses lyrical prose to create the same atmosphere I sought in writing Glastonbury Tor. Pope's fairies are not silly little winged creatures of romantic paintings or imitation-Tolkien. These are fairies as the medievals would have believed and feared, except most of their "powers" have natural herbal explanations. Pope tells an engrossing story with strong characters and believable setting. The fairies are seeking a teind-payer, one who will willingly become nothing and lay down his life, "the strength of your body, the force of your will, the power of your mind, the courage of your heart" for the good of the community. Kate's theology of Our Lord Christ as the ultimate teind-payer who payed the price once and for all is surprisingly Biblical for a non-religious publisher, yet totally appropriate in an historical period in which Christian faith was the basis of people's worldview.

I loved this book! It's a mix of Tam Lin and East of the Sun, West of the Moon. Very enjoyable read.

A great story! This book has all of my favorite elements in it: historical fiction, romance, mystery, and FAIRIES ( of all things). One of my absolute favorite books!

I loved this book! The way the author writes, you feel as if you are right there, and you don't get bogged down with details. I really liked the character of Kate Sutton. It's a shame that the author only wrote two books, this and "The Sherwood Ring", which I also highly recommend.
