- Erica Calcott: The narrator and main character of the present day chapters. She is inquisitive and is looking for the reason to why her cousin, Henry, went missing even though she has been advised not to keep looking.
- Catherine Calcott: Main Character of the early 1900's chapters until the last. She has come from a rich background in New York, living with her Aunt Bathilda. She moves to be with her husband who owns a ranch in Oklahoma. She has to learn to get used to this life with Indians living close on the Ranch and faraway from the town.
- Beth Calcott: The sister to Erica, Beth has been suffering for depression for many years only to be pestered by her son's father, Maxwell. She knows what happened to Henry but will not reveal this to Erica because she is haunted by it.
- Nathan "Dinny" Dinsdale: The childhood friend to Beth and Erica, he is one of the travellers that have always lived at the end of the house belonging to the Calcotts. He also remembers what happened to Henry but like Beth will not reveal it.
- Henry Calcott: The missing cousin of Beth and Erica. He went missing when he was 11 and some have believed him dead.
