Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable

by Seth Godin

You're either a Purple Cow or you're not. You're either remarkable or invisible. Make your choice.

What do Starbucks and JetBlue and KrispyKreme and Apple and DutchBoy and Kensington and Zespri and Hard Candy have that you don't? How do they continue to confound critics and achieve spectacular growth, leaving behind former tried-and true brands to gasp their last?

Face it,... (read more)

Marketing can't really be effective with crap product or service. Creativity helps, but product is king.

This is one of the best marketing books I have read. Not only that but the ideas are not just theory, they bridge the gap and help you see what other companies are doing to be remarkable and you can easily translate that to your business. Great book Seth

They (colleagues, former bosses) said the concept is cutting edge...a must read. Well, NOT REALLY. While it presents some practical insights, it is nothing that has not been presented in other books in more ways than one. The theme is: Be Different, be unique and be able to support and sustain it. That's the long and short of it...the most unfortunate part is it was written in such a boring manner that I was bored to sleep each time I'd start to read.

Great thoughts on why it is critical to be different and avoid the "me-to" traps of copying the successes of those around you.

Short but interesting. I particularly liked the part about applying it to yourself--I think it's important to embrace brand "you" more and more these days.

The 5th P of marketing might be "pray" or it could be "Purple Cow." Seth Godin would argue the latter. We at VeraSage love this book because we constantly preach differentiation as a form of competitive advantage. You don't have to be better than the guy down the street, just different. But as my colleague Ed Kless says, the question that always comes up is: "Tell us how other firms are differentiating themselves so we can do it too."

Read this book for the answer to that question!

This is a really cool book. Short, direct, and insightful. I'm not in business or marketing though, so I can't comment on how helpful it was for that. As a youth pastor, however, I got a lot of ideas on being *remarkable.* I like how the book isn't just about gimmicks (though a lot of the things mentioned are), but it's more about creating a product or service that really stands out.
