  • Thomas Ward: Twelve-year-old boy living on his family's farm. He is the seventh son of a seventh son, which gives him extra powers needed to battle the things that go bump in the night.
  • John Gregory: Gregory is the current Spook in the County and has spent the past several years looking for the apprentice to replace him, but the twenty-nine apprentices he's taken on before Tom have been disappointing. Gregory has a mysterious past and doesn't talk much, but we learn more about him as the story goes on. He finds that Tom is a very promising apprentice.
  • Mam: Tom's mother. Mam is a very mysterious woman hailing from Greece. Not much is known about her until much later in the series. She knows that Tom will change the world.
  • Alice Deane: Alice is the niece of a witch called "Bony Lizzie". She becomes Tom's good friend. However, she wears pointy shoes. Girls who wear pointy shoes is one of things the Spook warned Tom against.
  • Bony Lizzie: She uses bone magic, a type of necromancy involving the bones of dead enemies. She takes care of Tom's witch friend.
  • Mother Malkin: One of the most sinister witches, who used blood magic, a type of witchcraft that involved draining the blood of anyone she thought could have useful features.
  • Jack: One of Thomas Ward's brothers, Jack is the eldest and is married to a woman named Ellie. He resents Thomas after he gets taken in by the local Spook.
  • Ellie: Jack's wife.
