It has a timelessness about it that crosses cultural lines. It starts off interesting as it's the story of Wang Lung's marriage and his families struggle to survive. As the story progresses and his family grows I began to lose interest and eventually I was just trying to finish. By the end of the story I had lost most all sympathy for Wang and felt like he deserved what he got in the end. Which may have been exactly what the writer wanted for all I know.”
