This book is a little depressing (not that it bothered me, just saying). It is true to life, and gives the impression that all we work for is meaningless in the end.

One of my favourite books. I've read this over five times, and would still enjoy it again. Beautiful use of words and arrangement. Characters come alive and very human.

I can see why this book is considered a classic. It has a timelessness about it that crosses cultural lines. It starts off interesting as it's the story of Wang Lung's marriage and his families struggle to survive. As the story progresses and his family grows I began to lose interest and eventually I was just trying to finish. By the end of the story I had lost most all sympathy for Wang and felt like he deserved what he got in the end. Which may have been exactly what the writer wanted for all I know.
