  • Tom Custer: General William Armstrong Custer's younger brother. They share a very close relationship and both serve in the Union Cavalry.
  • Frederick Douglass: The same Frederick Douglass who escape slavery and wrote an autobiography in the real timeline.
  • Jackson: General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, the best general the Confederates have and so good the no one on the Union side can match him, even almost twenty years after the Civil War. Strikes fear into the hearts of Union commanders.
  • Stuart: Add a description of this character.
  • Harry Turtledove: The author.
  • Mr. Lincoln: Abraham Lincoln, who was voted out of office after the defeat by the Confederates and has been living in disgrace since. Borderline Socialist.
  • Theodore Roosevelt: Commander of a militia unit in Montana, serving under General Custer. He ranks as a Colonel of Militia.
  • Blaine: President of the United States who declares war on the Confederacy when they buy Sonora from Mexico.
  • Willcox: General Orlando Willcox, one of the U.S. generals. He leads the fight for Louisville, but is severely outclassed by Stonewall Jackson.

  • Libbie: General Custer's wife.
  • Gabe Hamilton
  • John Pope: General sent to deal with the Mormon uprising. Very critical of Abe Lincoln and hopes to hang him. Exacts harsh punishment on the Mormons and becomes a friend of General Custer.
  • George Custer: Lieutenant General of cavalry, out west fighting against Indians, but soon finds himself battling Mormons and British soldiers invading Montana. Amiable and outspoken, and hungry for battle.
