The perfect combination of his superior prose and the introduction of a complex, dark but compelling character who you reluctantly but irresistably learn too much about. The usual fastidious research brings the world to life but it's (relatively) contemporary setting makes Engleby a page turner.

Engleby is a book I may read all over again - soon.
