This is one of the best books I've read on the early days of our country. I have learned so much about the dynamics between George Washington, James Madison, John Adams and many, many more individuals who shaped policy affecting our relations with the Indians, England, France and Spain as well as the policy affecting the relations amongst the states and their governments.

I only recently discovered Joseph Ellis and am looking forward to reading his other books. This newest work looks at six pivotal points in the development of the United States as a nation as interpreted by Ellis. This is not an area in which I've read deeply, so I appreciate Ellis's ability to explain the significant contexts and personalities involved in each event in a way that makes the stories comprehensible even to someone who is still learning the finer details of the national narrative.
