“As a book of short stories, this is quite charmingly wonderful, if not particularly memorable. It tells just enough to form a vague picture for us to colour with our own imagination and interpretation. For those who like to see things from all perspectives, this annoyingly implies a lot of blanks. They're intentional blanks, though, which makes them perfectly acceptable, even substantial and purposeful; they tie in smoothly with the theme of bigger-than-life-narrative and how much truth you can construe from it. I found this book both timeless and original, light-hearted and depressingly morose, elegantly witty and - well, yes, at times, a bit crude. Not in the 'vulgar' way, more in the 'simple', 'functional' way, that is probably necessary to carry the story without weighing it down with too much of any particular emotion. This isn't really a book to get emotionally attached to - probably too short for that - but if you're looking for a quick read that's clever and charming, this might just be the book for you, and you might find something meaningful in it. If you're looking for something a bit longer and more scenic, perhaps try the movie?”
