This stand-alone thriller is probably my favorite of Deaver's novels. The tense plot - a group of deaf schoolgirls being held hostage - is made even more suspenseful by the ticking clock. The hostage takers promise to kill the girls in eight hours and every few chapters the book lets you know how much time is left. The fact that almost the entire story plays out over that eight hour time period makes this one hard to put down. If you want SMART thrillers with characters you'll actually care...
