My absolute favorite Miles book, and one of my favorite books ever, but DO NOT start the series with this book. This is a major transition book f or Miles and others and you need to know the characters first. Two recommended starting points would be either Shards of Honor (about Miles' parents)...

This highly satisfying read represents a fine apex point in a space opera series. It can be read alone as it represents a synthesis and resolution of the risky strategy taken in prior volumes by its protagonist Miles Vorkosigan in forging an alternative life to surmount his physical handicaps and restricted choices in the ruling class of a hereditary aristocracy. Miles in his youth finds a way to thrive as the leader of a mercenary fleet tasked with undercover operations for the Imperial space navy and excels in diverse adventures in a galaxy of several competitive human empires connected by wormholes. In this tale, his epilepsy after his recovery from severe injuries and battlefield cryopreservation forces him to return home. His depression over leaving his undercover life behind is turned around when he becomes engaged by a crisis surrounding a sudden medical problem of the Imperial intelligence director. The action is thrilling and fun without resorting to shoot-em-ups one might expect from this genre, and the development of Miles' character and that of others that richly populate this tale are successful in both emotional engagement and humor.

Yay! I enjoyed this one much more than the last one. Then, I'm not one for long, drawn-out battle scenes, so that might be it. To be honest, my top two suspects on thew whodunit in this one were the person who did it and the person they accused of it. But I loved how they got there. I look forward to reading some more since it seems like a VERY large part of Miles' life is over and we've got all sorts of new stuff to look at now.

Miles is really deveoping as a person and discovering he can be himself without manifesting different personas. His career is moving in positive directions and he is accepting himself as a separate person of potential from his name and family. WOW, can we say growing up?

One of my favorite Miles novels. It is a great transision between young wild Miles and adult Miles. I love this book.

Things are changing for Miles Vorkosigan. His cryo-rebirth is causing serious health problems and he’s lied to Imp/sec. Simon Illyan, head of Imp/sec is stricken. Miles must re-evaluate all the parts of his life – the adventurer spaceman Admiral Naismith, the life as a Vor lord and even his love for Elli Quinn. Fine internal growth.

Big changes for Miles. Not as good as some of the others but still worth reading.
