“SWEETHEART DEAL by Claire Matturro ($23.95, Morrow) Fourth in the Lilly Cleary series
Rating A-
Lilly Cleary isn't thrilled to go back to her hometown of Bugfest, Georgia. She has a lying client she needs to be excused from defending, and other pressing legal matters. Her brother Dan needs her help, so Lilly gathers up a lot of organic food and sets off the Bugfest.
It seems her mother, Willette, has shot and killed a man. That her mother is a recluse and hasn't left her house in years makes Lilly wonder what is going on. Lilly and her brother Delvon left home while still in their teens and haven't been back. Dan has been the person to take care of her mother, or at least attempt to see she has what she needs.
Lilly finds out her mother was upset about having a freezer delivered instead of the refrigerator Dan ordered. According to Willette, the freezer was full of voodoo eggs. Willette has been hospitalized and sedated, so the police have not been able to get her story Lilly wants the heavy medication stopped, but runs into a doctor who refuses to do so. Lilly encourages Dan to get himself made Willette's guardian, and helps him accomplish that.
Lilly meets her old friend Shalonda who is married to the police chief. Also on the scene is a swarmy hospital administrator, and old boyfriend, and assorted residents of the small town.
Lilly finds herself drawn into her mother's predicament, and agrees to help her brother and sister in law. Sadly, the house is filled with debris of probably forty years of living. Lilly has a fear of dirt, and the filth in the house might just do her in if she isn't careful.
Lilly seeks a reason for her mother's actions, though aware it may not be what she'd want to hear. She finds out about her family history as well as what happened the day of the shooting.
I always enjoy reading about Lilly. I fear if she ever came to my house, she'd go into convulsions, but she'd be welcome. Taking Lilly back home was a nice way of learning about her past and her family.
