This book was thoughtful and laugh-out-loud funny. Shalom Auslander takes the idea of a personal God to a whole new level, and lives his life in a constant struggle for meaning and recognition from God and from the humans around him. I could relate to a lot of his gripes about Jewish practice,...

Hilarious and memorable memoir of growing up in a highly dysfunctional Orthodox Jewish family in America. The author seems to continuously want to escape his religion, yet doesn't ever seem successful at it.

I laughed, I cried. I too have struggled with the peer-pressured circumcision of your child dilemma, and religion in general (although i didnt have it as bad as him!) so it was nice to know i'm not alone.

It contains sad yet funny anecdotes about being brought up in an Orthodox Jewish home.

This felt like it would have worked better as a magazine feature. After a while it felt redundant and repetative.

Laugh-out-loud funny and extremely well written, Foreskin's Lament will be especially interesting to anyone familar with Jewish culture but it will entertain any discerning reader.

Fantastically FUNNY! Auslander is like a Jewish Rushdie. I have been waiting for a book like this to come along. I started reading it two days ago and could not stop. Fell asleep with it in my hands after reading more than 1/2 this book in one sitting; woke up the next morning and read it until I finished it. I wished this book would never end. If you have come from a Jewish family you will recognize yourself, your siblings, your parents and alot of the other characters in the book. If you were not raised in a Jewish family you will learn very quickly how guilt can torture the Jewish child's mind into paranoia and how the "rules" of an Orthodox upbringing can affect us throughout our lives.
