I thought the dichotomy of Gore-Browne's attitude towards the Bemba and Africans in general was interesting. He was known to beat the workers on his property but at the same time he very obviously loved his manservent Henry and worked so hard for the African's right for self-governance. He genuinly seemed to want the natives to play a role in the local politics, as they should have. It was refreshing to see at least one British colonial who did not see such a racial divide and insisted on treating them as you would any other human...except for the whole beating thing.
