After the somewhat underwhelming story in 'The Joiner King', this book, the second in the Dark Nest trilogy, comes as a breath of fresh air. The story begins a year after the events of 'King', with the Killiks seemingly engaged in illegal smuggling operations involving the trade of their black membrosia (a narcotic drug) in exchange for hyperdrive coolant and fuel rods. Apparently, the Dark Nest is busy building a fleet colony ships and now seems intent upon unleashing on the galaxy. The Gorog (Dark Nest Killiks) are also intent on keeping the Jedi out of their affairs, dispatching assasin bugs and their newest Jedi Joiner Alema Rar virtually non-stop. Overall, the story seems to have a better flow, easily transitioning from one group of heroes to another. Denning also does an excellent job of foreshadowing Jacen Solo's fall to the dark side (I suspect that this forms the major story line in the Legacy of the Force series). There are less references to the Yuuzhan Vong series (a welcome relief) and Denning even ties in with the prequel trilogy in an excellent mystery subplot. While this may not be a classic Star Wars story, it is still worth reading and I look forward to seeing how the story concludes in 'The Swarm War'.
