“I have been a fan of Patterson for years, especially his Alex Cross series. Even though I am a fan, I have not read many of his earlier works. On a recent trip out of town, I picked up season of the Machete and The Midnight Club.
I must say The Midnight Club is one of the best Patterson books I have read in a long time. The book is one published very early in Patterson’s career. It was written before he turned famous and before his books became so corrupted with co-authors. I hate to say it but I find now days Patterson seems to be more concerned with quantity rather then quality.
What I enjoyed most in The Midnight Club was the characters. They were very complex but flawed. Parker and Stefanovitch were cops out for revenge on St.-Germain, the local drug lord and the one responsible for killing Parker’s brother and taking down Stefanovitch in a shot out that left him in a wheel chair. St.-Germain was also murdered Stef’s wife. I loved Stef right from the start. He had his ups and downs, but I felt nothing but admiration towards him. Being confined to the chair never stopped him from doing his job, a Lieutenant with the New York City police department. Parker, it took me a little longer to warm up to him, I was not sure at first whether he was corrupt or not. I also liked Sarah and I am glad she and Stef hit it off.
The plot was full of action and suspense. I had a hard time putting it down. The only really problem I had with this book was the ending. I felt it was a little rushed. I was also upset with the death of a character I really liked, but now that I am finished the book I think the death had to happen in order for Parker and Stef to connect and form the relationship they had at the end of the book.
I recommend this book to anyone who like mystery detective books with lots of action and to anyone who is a fan of Patterson.

“Interesting point of view, with an accurate representation of back-alley crime”

“Very cool book. However, it has been awhile so I need to reread it.”

This book was published 4 years before the Alex Cross series came out, but there are plenty of parallels here. A super-villain in control, lots of red herrings, corrupt police officers, an heroic central character who battles against all the odds.
It's certainly not perfect, but it's an enjoyable read and an interesting look back at how Patterson used to write.”
