It all started at a place called the School. Scientists mixed DNA of birds and humans. They were successful. They created kids 98% human, 2% avian hybrid. This DNA gives them the ability to grow wings and fly, as well as other strange powers. Iggy, Angel, Nudge, Gasman, Fang, and Maximum Ride joined together in a group that they call The Flock. They fight side by side to keep themselves hidden and stay together no matter what. They are a family, but they still do not know everything about each other quite yet...

  • Maximum Ride (or Max): The leader of the Flock due to her seniority over the others, Max is a 14-year-old girl who is just trying to keep her famliy together. She is very strong, sarcastic, and loving towards her Flock. She also is a brave tomboy with amazing powers against evil; the main character of the book.
  • Fang: Part of the flock; the second in command after Max. You cannot tell if he likes Max the same way she likes him, known to be very dark and mysterious and almost never shows emotion.
  • Iggy: Part of the flock; is blind. And has amazing other senses. Has very good hearing and is very good with his hands (can open locks, etc.)
  • Nudge: Part of the flock; a talkative eleven-year-old girl with a cute, bubbly and fun personality.
  • Gasman (aka Gazzy): Part of the Flock; Angel's brother.
  • Angel: Part of the Flock; The youngest in the group and can read other peoples minds, and control them.
  • Ari: Jeb Batchelder's son, a forlorn six-year-old who was genetically enhanced to become an Eraser (part human, part wolf). Hates the flock.
  • Ella Martinez: Ella is a girl that Max saved from a group of armed boys after Max saw them while flying. Max likes being with Ella and her mother because they make her feel wanted by people outside the flock.
  • Celeste: Angel's stuffed bear that she persuaded a stranger to get for her. It means the world to her; she will do anything to get it back.
  • Erasers: Mutants. Part wolf and part human. Trained by the school, and love to rip mutants like the flock apart.
  • Ella's Mother: A vetenarian who cares for Max and thinks of her as a second daughter after Ella.
  • Jeb Batchelder: Helped six mutant kids, A.K.A. the flock escape the School where he was working as a whitecoat/scientist. Helped care for them for a while and was like a father for them and hero/role-model. Was very happy with the flock until, he went out one day and didn't come back.

Some violence, though this book isn't too bad at all. Some mild language. Ages 9 and above would probably enjoy this book, too. Great themes about loving who you are even with all of your "quirks" strong family and friend bonding.
