Eben McAllister is bored with the farm and his home town. He reads a book on the 7 wonders of the world and wishes that he could travel. His dad tells him that if he can find 7 wonders in Sassafras Springs, he will send him to Colorado to a relative, so that he can see a mountain. Thus, the saga begins.... Eben finds out that wonders are defined in many different ways and that the people of Sassafras Springs are more interesting than he thought.

    Character Captain -
After reading the first chapter I know that Eben McAllister is the main character of the book. Eben is a dreamer, he wants to see the Seven Wonders of the World and is immersed in a book about the Wonders. He seems like a relativley smart child. His father is a farmer and a very much a home body as is his Aunt Pretty. His father sparks the idea for Eben to locate Seven Wonders in Sassafras Springs. If Eben cannot find seven in seven days, he will pay for a train ticket to anywhere Eben wishes. Eben's father and Aunt Pretty are brother and sister. She moved in to help out after Eben's mother passed away. There are some other characters mentioned like, their dog Sal and some relatives that live in Colorado. Lastly, there is Miss Collins, a teacher that gave Eben the book about the Seven Wonders of the World.

Read in 2008-2009. Interesting story of an Ozark boy who must find seven wonders in his small town in order to earn a train trip to Colorado. He learns some amazing things about neighbors he's known all his life. Not too exciting for kids but may be good for some 4th-5th graders.

What I like about this book is that how Eben learns to see his boring, little community with new appreciation. After finding Eben longing over the 7 wonders of the world Eben's father challenges Eben to find 7 wonders right here in his own town. This is a great read-aloud.
