I read this years ago, and here's fair warning - it's one of those "old-school" romance novels, so yes it's a little campy but there's more to it and the romance is part of a really neat and clever story.

In today's world men are the only wizards, and they shun any women who show talent for magic and certainly won't teach any women who have ability for magic. The reasons behind this prohibition are so old no one actually remembers them.

Enter Serena Smyth, orphaned urchin. Serena is talented, defiant and determined to develop her talent. She approaches Richard Merlin - master wizard, scion and wealthy businessman to the mundane world and asks - demands actually - that he teach her. Despite the taboo on teaching women, Merlin takes her on as an apprentice, and, of course, love blossoms between them as Serena hones her magical abilities.

Unfortunately, the lovers can't tell anyone about their relationship because of the prohibition on female wizards, so the only way for them to be together is to go back in time to discover and fix whatever happened to create the taboo by changing history in "Atlantia" where they've determined the original rift happened.

The adventures between the past and present are light and fluffy and fun. This isn't War & Peace, but if you like romance and magic this might be a book for you. I liked it, and the scenes between Merlin and Serena are very romantic and sexy.

When Richard Merlin first sets eyes on Serena Smyth - the bedraggled sixteen-year-old runaway who shows up on his doorstep - he can sense the barely restrained power within her. Guided by pure instinct, Serena has come over three hundred miles in order to find a Master Wizard to teach her a forbidden art. For Serena's sake Richard will teach her his art, despite a taboo so ancient that the reasons for its existence are all but forgotten.

Nine years later, Richard never expects to risk all that he had and all that he is in order to save Serena, and in the process find a love none of his kind had ever experienced. Richard and Serena's quest will bring them back in time to a lost civilization called Atlantis and will test their faith in and love for each other. I give this time travel romance four stars.

I wouldn't go so far to say this is a keeper

I'm was going through my TBR (to be read)pile some time ago and this one has been staring at me in the face for years now. Since I had just finished reading "Forever" by Jude Deveraux, which had a similiar subject matter, I figured because it's so close to Halloween I would continue on this genre.

This book is a Time Travel, although you couldn't tell this from the excerpts and brief description on the back of the book. The Hero is quite a bit older than the heroine (Serena)so if you have a problem with a almost 10 year age gap this might not be your cup of tea. The Heroine is quite mature for her age and she is developing her "Wizard" skills under the tutelage of Richard Merlin who we find out was forbidden to teach a female the art of Wizardry (sp) they have to go back into time to try and "fix" and/or discover whatever caused the reason for this rule, in order for Serena to survive.

This book was.... "weird" if you can find it for a reasonable price I say go for it, if only to add to your collection of Kay Hoopers books. This is one of her earlier ones and is not a reflection of her writing skills today. I found it to be weird because the whole "curtain" thing was never really explained thoroughly enough for me... and the whole idea that raping a Female Wizard was a way to gain her powers was a bit ridiculous and bad taste for a story line yes, I know this is fiction but I still had a problem with that.

Maybe it was me that I was thoroughly confused about the War between the Female Wizards and the Male Wizards, then the ending was a little strange too. Anyhoo the gist of this review is if you can obtain it from your local library first, or happen upon it at a Yard/Garage Sale then sure get it but I don't know there are a lot more books out there now in this genre that are more of a fulfilling read. Also would recommend The Alchemist by Donna Boyd if you like this subject matter.

WOW! Really loved this surprise. Richard Merlin(of course) is a Level 10 Master Wizard. He lives in modern day Seattle. No one knows of his powers as he lives a normal live of a wealthy businessman. Serena has recognized her powers at age 16 and comes across the country to find Richard and to become his apprentice. Many laws of wizardry come in conflict with modern living to create a wonderful love story and magical adventure.
