Didn’t Like It

The science fiction feels so removed from reality as to be disengaging. There are no "human beings" in this story--nothing you would recognize as one anyway.

fantastic re-read, as ever, the unfurling of how the city grew up is wonderful in it's details, and the stories of the machine race chilling and yet seemingly inconsequential here but foreshadowing the later books in the universes and adding depth.
The lost memory trick works here as a story device precisely because it is so multi-levelled, not a singular plot denouement.

Chasm City is a rare breed - a complex well-integrated multi-layered plot and a page turner with satisfying pace right up to the end. It is a book that makes you wonder in delight but at the same time envelopes you in tension and mystery. It will engage with your mind and leave you very satisfied at the end.

This is my 1st Alastair Reynolds book and a good one. There are 3 main plotlines going, all from Tanner's viewpoint: in the book's "present", there is his hunt down to kill Reivich along with Tanner's interactions with survivors of a technology plague in the 'canopy' (kind of like aristocrats) and the 'mulch' (lower class / no class); Tanner's flashbacks to his mercenary/bodyguard days with Cahuella and Cahuella's wife Gitta (which eventually leads to the hunt for Reivich); and the steadily more intrusive "memories" of Sky Hausman, a hated / worshipped spaceship captain. The 3 plotlines intermingle, slowly coming together, and creating questions of identity before the revelation.
There isn't anything truly earth-shatteringly original here, but I thoroughly enjoyed the read.

Very impressive sci-fi with a lot of futuristic technology by acclamied ex-ESA al reynolds about an amnesiac thug who travels through space trying to catch a villian. Two stories entwined together for an ending you will never guess.

On the war-weary planet of Sky's Edge, soldier Tanner Mirabel doggedly pursues nobleman Argent Reivich in a quest for revenge. Reivich flees the planet, travelling to the distant world of Yellowstone with Mirabel in hot pursuit. Unbeknownst to both men, Yellowstone has been transformed by a mysterious plague which causes all manner of machinery to enact erratic and dangerous "mutations" at random. While pursuing Reivich, Tanner begins to hallucinate episodes from the distant past of his home planet--in these episodes Tanner percieves events from the perspective of Sky Haussman, who is both revered and reviled by his descendants on Sky's Edge. On Yellowstone Tanner encounters a mysterious substance known as Dream Fuel which has connections to the plague, to Reivich and even to Tanner's own shrouded past. Then things get weird...

Really enjoyed this one even more than the other I've read so far in the series. Nice how Reynolds manages to tell what sound like three unrelated tales and yet weave then together in the conclusion. There were several times when I thought I know the way the story was heading and I'd find I was only partilly right. Thumbs up!
