Novel for lesbians. Very simple story. I'm hetero, but this fiction seems far from reality. But well, it was written a long time ago, who knows...?

Patricia Highsmith’s, The Price of Salt, is a classic among lesbian fiction novels. Published in 1952, the story follows Therese Belivet, a set designer working a seasonal job at a toy store until she can find work with a theater. One day at the height of the Christmas season at the toy store, Therese notices a beautiful, tall blonde picking out a doll from the counter across from Therese’s. She does not understand why she is so drawn to this woman. As the blonde makes her way to Therese’s counter to order her item, nervousness wells up inside of Therese. Therese suddenly becomes incompetent as she takes down the woman’s delivery information. After finishing the transaction and watching the woman walk away, Therese knows she must see this woman again. She decides to send a Christmas card to the address the woman left on the delivery slip and to her surprise, she receives a telephone call from the blonde a few days later. Therese excitedly accepts the woman’s request for a lunch meeting and soon learns her name is Carol. After another visit days later at Carol’s house, Therese discovers that she is in the middle of a terrible divorce that involves the possibility of Carol’s losing custody of her daughter. Spending more and more time with Carol, Therese begins to shut out the other people in life, including the man she’s been dating for some time. Carol and Therese steadily begin falling in love but extenuating circumstances threaten their relationship and the possibility of their being together.
It is no wonder why this book is considered a classic. I thoroughly enjoyed the well-put-together plot that kept me enraptured in its beauty. This book constantly kept me wondering what was going to happen next and I never lost interest. The Price of Salt is a must-read for anyone interested in lesbian fiction or anyone who is simply looking for a beautiful story to read.

A lovely dark romance dealing with a secret love between two women in the 1950s.

Romantic in a contrived 50s fashion, but it must have been quite meaningful in 1953 for its lesbian coming-of-age story.

Apparently the book that inspired Nabokov - forbidden (Sapphic) love, the American road-trip. While not a patch on VN, it becomes bogged down in the middle, but picks up once their relationship is consummated and other plot threads come together.

Very good writing. Story about two women that meet (one is 19 yrs. old & the other is 30 yrs. old). They end up having a lesbian relationship. Toward the end, it got a little slow but had a nice ending.
